Biosniffer Continuous Monitoring Detector

The Biosniffer Continuous Monitoring Detector for Biowarfare Agents is an emerging technology platform designed to provide real-time information on the probable cause of an atmospheric release of biowarfare agents. Each system is designed to provide visual, auditory and electronic warning signals to indicate that bioagent release event has occurred.

The Biosniffer system consists of two components: a portable electronic sniffing and detection device; and a disposable reaction cartridge containing liquid reagents that react in the presence of certain bioagents.
The Biosniffer electronic detector continuously samples air and bubbles the air sample through the reaction cartridge, thereby exposing the reagents in the cartridge to the air sample. The reagents in the cartridge are designed to activate spores and induce metabolic activity of certain airborne bacteria. Aspecially formulated metabolic indicator designed to indicate the rate of bacterial metabolism is also packaged in the cartridge.

A photometric analyzer contained in the Biosniffer is programmed to detect the rate of change in bacterial metabolism. During a bioagent release event, the Biosniffer will accumulate an increase in bacterial content into the reagents through air sampling. This increased level of bacteria in the reagents will result in increased rate of bacterial metabolism, and hence an increased rate in the changes in color of the indicator. The photometric analyzer will then interpret the change in the rate of color formation as a bioagent release event, and send warnings through visual, auditory, and electronic output systems.

The reaction cartridge consists of pre-formulated reagents and connection tubing packaged in aunitized, ruggedized format. Connection of the cartridges to the Biosniffer device is as simple as inserting the cartridge into the machine, and making two simple tubing connections.
