Risk Awareness

The risks posed by staff who are under the influence of alcohol can be serious in any workplace. Drunk or hungover employees can be unproductive, cause accidents and undermine team working.

Employers are responsible for the safety and well-being of all staff. This means identifying issues that may be a risk.  If someone appears to be drunk it is important to get to the bottom of the issue. Send them home if you need to, but aim to get to the underlying reason for their behaviour.

Reasons someone might be drinking more than usual include stress at home or work, social pressure or even just habit. But it’s important to identify any potential problems before they negatively affect them, other employees or the business. You may want to refer them to some local support. The good news is that there are a number of organisations that can help. A good place to start is NHS Drinkline: 0800 917 8282. There’s plenty of advice available too. Addaction run local groups around they country or you may want to check out the websites of Alcohol Concern or Drinkaware.

In any case you’ll need to have a clear framework of what is – and isn’t acceptable. This might take the form of an alcohol policy and could include specific training on alcohol awareness. By providing a clear and supportive environment you are protecting your staff and your business.
